TV or PC monitor - where will you play?

It is Friday evening and you sit down on a soft comfortable sofa to play your XBOX One X. With a cold drink, you choose to play COD Modern Warfare Remastered because it is the most beautiful game on this platform. You are in for four hours of gameplay - but will you play in front of your TV or PC monitor? The difference is small, but surely there is one.

So, when you play with your TV, you are seated in the living room with your console, while when you play on your PC monitor, you sit behind your desk. The PC monitor is definitely closer to the real gaming experience than sitting in front of a TV. In addition, playing on a PC monitor also means that you will see more details every moment as opposed to a TV screen.

Some people try to solve this by turning up the brightness on their TV - but this rarely produces sufficient results. With a PC monitor, there is no problem as all pixels are bright enough for any content and much brighter if needed. On a PC monitor or a high-end TV, it does not look like "my graphics card cannot handle 4k", it looks much better even though some scenes can still be improved.

What TV should you choose?

Still, when speaking about the best TVs for gaming, most people think of either OLED or QLED. Both are fantastic TVs with very different features and price tags. It is important to realize that there is no clear winner in the TV game at this moment - but we will try our best to give you some guidance here in this article.

TCL S435

Panel

This TV has a VA panel and is not as spectacular as OLED or QLED - but it sure does its job. Just like the latter two, though, the S435 has excellent picture quality and should be very responsive when gaming because of its low input lag. In addition, this TV also supports HDR10 + which makes it even better for games with high dynamic ranges.

Dolby Vision

Though it doesn`t have a Dolby vision option, this TV has an alternative variant. It is good enough for most users, but it cannot match the real thing.

Gaming features

The S435 has a few gaming features to make your experience as good as possible. The first is called "Game mode" and reduces input latency by a bit - not that much though. In addition, TCL also added a black frame insertion feature that does a great job at reducing blurring in some games.

Brightness

This TV has good brightness, but it does not have a local dimming function. The problem with this TV is that it cannot play HDR10 + content at its full potential as the screen is too bright for most of these videos. That being said, many games look great on it thanks to pure blacks and great shadow detailing thanks to the lack of an active backlight.

Performance

The response time is good enough for most games - but just like all VA panels, you should expect some blurry images in fast-paced games. In addition, the input lag is quite decent and will be fine for any gamer who cannot afford a monitor at this price range.

LG C8 OLED

Panel

Now we reached the big leagues with these TVs. With OLED displays, gamers get to experience amazing image quality with perfect blacks and a fantastic response time of less than 10ms. Not only that, but LG`s latest generation of OLED TVs also have excellent gaming features built-in so nothing needs to be bought separately here!

Dolby Vision

This TV has a Dolby option which can play all of your movies in Dolby vision. It might not be as good as the TV itself, but it works very well with HDR games - though you should also make sure that your video player is up to snuff.

Gaming features

This TV has excellent input lag performance which can go under 20ms on some TVs for gaming. Though this does not matter much if you are playing alone, having a low input lag is crucial when playing multiplayer shooters or other fast-paced games. Also, this TV has an optional black frame insertion mode which can help reduce motion blur significantly if turned on.

Brightness

The C8 OLED P4 panel is one of the best around and offers perfect blacks no matter what game you play. The brightness can go up to around 550 nits when in HDR mode - but it is still perfect for all types of games.

Performance

This TV has an excellent response time, even if not as good as the XBOX one X. If you are playing alone, this TV will be responsive enough for you and when playing with friends, then input lag performance should be fine too. The only thing that would bother some people is the motion blur when using black frame insertion mode.

LG OLED A1

Panel

This is a 5th generation OLED panel - and it truly shows. The A1 has an excellent input latency which can go down to around 15-20ms for gaming which makes the TV very responsive. In addition, this TV does not have any real issues with motion blur as long as you do not use black frame insertion mode.

Dolby Vision

Unfortunately, this TV does not have Dolby Vision support, but that should be fine since HDR10+ is also supported. Overall though, if you are looking for a great movie experience then you might want to invest more money into a different TV instead of the A1 because of its mediocre contrast ratio and viewing angles when used in a dark room or in front of direct sunlight.

Gaming features

This TV has excellent input lag performance when in a game mode which is only hampered by the motion interpolation feature when turned on. Other than that, this TV works great for gaming with a very low response time - but the viewing angles are not that good in dark rooms or in direct sunlight either.

Brightness

The A1 OLED panel has one of the best blacks around and its brightness can reach up to around 450 nits in HDR modes. Not only that, but it also has amazing shadow details due to its perfect black levels!

Performance

This TV is amazing for gaming especially since it does not have any big issues with motion blur when playing fast-paced games. However, it does have some issues when in bright rooms or in front of direct sunlight due to its mediocre contrast ratio.

LG OLED C1

Panel

The C1 has one of the best panels around with perfect blacks. The input lag performance on this TV is also great, but not as good as on the other OLEDs mentioned here. However, do keep in mind that if you want to play FPS games competitively then we recommend an OLED TV with a better response time instead of like the B7 above.

Dolby Vision

Unfortunately, this TV does not have Dolby vision support and it relies only on HDR10+ and HLG for its playback since there is no RGB LED type lighting behind it too (just white). Though HDR10+ content might be limited at launch, LG will add more to their TVs over time - though if you really like gaming then we still recommend getting a gaming-oriented TV from other brands.

Gaming features

This TV has a good input lag performance but it does not have any additional modes or features which can help reduce motion blur when playing during the daytime especially. Overall though, it should be fine for most games and if you are going to play in a darker room then this will definitely not cause you any issues at all!

Brightness

This TV will get plenty bright enough even for HDR10+ games and movies - but that is only true when playing alone since there's no local dimming feature on this TV whatsoever, making it less suitable for multiplayer gaming at night. The C1 also has the worst viewing angles out of all TVs mentioned here since it does not have any panel-level local dimming feature.

Performance

This TV has a near-instant response time which makes it great for fast-paced games, but the input lag performance is only as good as on average TVs out there. In addition to that, this TV will not do well in bright rooms or in front of direct sunlight due to its mediocre contrast ratio.

Vizio MQ7

Panel

The MQ7 has a very unique panel design since it is actually not an OLED, but it still manages to get impressively bright. It also has great input lag performance for gaming and while the viewing angles are not that good in dark rooms or in direct sunlight, overall this TV will do great if you game at night!

Dolby Vision

Unfortunately, Vizio did not include support for Dolby's vision on this TV despite having amazing black levels like on other OLED TVs out there. Though HDR10+ is supported, HDR might be limited when playing during the daytime (not sure yet).

Gaming features

This TV performs really well for gaming especially since its response time can get down to around 10ms. Other than that, this TV does not have any additional picture modes or features that can help reduce motion blur when playing during the daytime especially.

Brightness

This TV gets impressively bright and should be fine for HDR10+ content even when playing in a bright room. However, there is no local dimming feature on this TV just like with every other Vizio TV out there so it is not suitable for multiplayer gaming at night.

Performance

The input lag performance of this TV is great and overall it works well for fast-paced games - but it still might cause some issues when in direct sunlight or in bright rooms due to its mediocre contrast ratio. Overall, we highly recommend this TV if you game at night and if you want a TV with great blacks.

What is better for gaming: LED, OLED, or WLED monitors?

LED monitors for gaming are the superior choice when it comes to fast-paced games where response time and input lag performance are key in winning. For single-player games which do not require lightning-fast reflexes, OLED or WRGB displays will provide an overall better experience with much smoother gameplay even if they have slightly higher input lag than regular TVs!

Although many people might think that LED makes for a better display when playing video games, in reality, it does not really matter which type of monitor you use when playing since the quality of content being displayed on them is far more important than the technology behind them! Make sure to get a computer monitor with low input lag though... No gaming monitor can equal the speed of a real gaming PC!

Why should I pick LED over other display technologies?

The vast majority of gamers always choose an LCD or LED monitor for gaming, especially first-person shooters since their response time is important. Even though the best monitors out there are IPS displays, most people don't go with them simply because they have low response times and high input lag which can be crucial during competitive online multiplayer games where milliseconds matter - that's why TN panels are still the standard for gaming monitors today.

LED technology found in TV screens will provide a much better contrast ratio compared to both OLED and WLED. This means that blacks will appear deeper on LED TVs resulting in more realistic dark scenes which will it easier to spot enemies lurking in the shadows. This technology also gets rid of issues like the flashlight effect or washed-out colors when playing in dark environments.

Final words

When choosing a TV for PS4 Pro or Xbox One X games, you should always prioritize contrast ratio, viewing angles and black levels over color accuracy and other picture quality metrics since those do not matter as much as the ones we mentioned! This is especially true if you are planning to use your new TV for multiplayer gaming at night or in dark rooms.
