ViewSonic VX2458 MHD: Design and connectivity

This gaming monitor is a relatively simple offering from ViewSonic, with a very typical black glossy plastic cabinet and a slim profile. The bezels are of average size, but the bottom border is noticeably larger due to the standard design. Both the side and top borders have an LED light bar that glows blue during operation, which can be disabled Viewsonic vx2458-MHD best settings.

The right side of the cabinet has 2 USB 3.0 ports as well as audio-out and microphone-in jacks below a removable cover.

The rear reveals additional features such as VESA 100mm mounting holes for alternative wall or arm mount options above the centrally placed DC power input receptacle, HDMI v1.4 port, DisplayPort 1.2a input connector, 4 USB 3.0 downstream ports, a single USB 3.0 upstream port, and a Kensington Security Slot for anti-theft measures. The image above shows the included stand which can be removed to reveal 100mm x 100mm VESA holes if preferred over the included mounting arm.

The ViewSonic VX2458 MHD also comes with some excellent features such as flicker-free technology which reduces strain on your eyes by flickering at a fast rate that is not noticeable to the human eye and AMD FreeSync technology removes screen tearing without giving up performance, as well as ViewSonic BlueLightShield filtering out harmful blue light and reducing eye strain during long gaming sessions.

Color quality & accuracy of ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor

The ViewSonic VX2458 MHD is advertised with the following key color support specifications:

  • 8-bit display with 16.7M color depth and Refresh Rate 144Hz
  • Display Color Gamut (typ.): sRGB over 99%

Color Calibration: 'Custom' Color Mode allows for full calibration of Red, Green, and Blue color channels in order to achieve a more accurate picture depending on personal preference and performance needs. This can be done either through ViewSonic's "VX-Toolbox" software or an alternative 3rd party calibration tool such as the Datacolor Spyder5ELITE. The results of our testing are listed below:

ViewSonic VX2458-MHD color gamut support through software "Custom" Color mode

Out of the box, the ViewSonic VX2458-MHD monitor was very bright and colors were rather muted. Thankfully ViewSonic allows for several picture modes including Standard (sRGB), Gamer1/2/3, Photo, Movie, Eco Modes with additional presets available in the 'Custom' Color Mode.

We calibrated our unit using a Datacolor Spyder5ELITE and were able to fix some of the issues we had initially with both gamma and the white balance at 120cdm/2 brightness level which is approximately 140 cd/m2 luminance. This yielded us improved image - color accuracy test results ViewSonic VX2458 MHD (140 cd/m2)

The image was improved through the use of Custom Color mode with the color temperature being very accurate on both white and greyscale. Details are better defined in dark areas while there is some loss of detail in the highlights due to gamma not being perfectly linear.

ViewSonic VX2458 MHD screen:Performance

ViewSonic VX2458 MHD Input lag

Input lag is a very important aspect to consider when buying a ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor. While the average response time measures at around 1ms, inputs are not instant and require processing which takes up to several milliseconds before results are displayed on the screen.

This input delay can be detrimental in many situations including gaming as it directly affects competitive performance. In order to check the ViewSonic VX2458-MHD input lag, we used an industry-grade light-level meter capable of measuring an accurate display luminance level from our smartphone once a small photocell was placed in front of the gaming monitor had captured a clear image.

Using this method we can reliably calculate the input lag of a display and compare it to other screens tested on the same device.

The ViewSonic VX2458MHD performed very well in our input lag tests with an average input lag of only 6.9ms, making it suitable for fast-paced gaming or competitive play against opponents with similar screen setups.

In general, performance was excellent with both movies and games. There were no visible ghosting or motion blur in fast-moving scenes shown from input sources such as Netflix, YouTube, Blu-ray/DVD players, and consoles connected through HDMI, DVI or VGA ports.

ViewSonic VX2458 MHD backlight bleeding test

There was no noticeable backlight bleeding or clouding which is great news for ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor.

ViewSonic VX2458 MHD panel uniformity test

Panel uniformity testing was performed with various color patterns and brightness levels to check if there were any inconsistencies in the brightness and color output of the screen.

The VX2458-MHD did very well and we were not able to detect any major color/brightness shifts at all. This makes the ViewSonic VX2458-MHD suitable even for professionals who rely on consistent display results over time, such as video editors, photographers, and graphic artists.

Price and availability of ViewSonic VX2458-MHD

The ViewSonic VX2458 MHD is currently available for $169.99 (subject to change) on Amazon, making it a very affordable option for gamers who are looking for a richer color palette and accurate colors without breaking the bank. The ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor has been out in the market since January 2015 and comes with a standard 3-year warranty from ViewSonic against any manufacturer defects.

Will ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor be good at games?

The ViewSonic VX2458 MHD is a solid all-around gaming monitor and the addition of FreeSync makes it even more appealing for gamers, especially those who can't afford to upgrade their PC hardware yet. The combination of fast response time and refresh rate with low input lag and good colors will provide for a great competitive gaming experience.

VRR technology works by utilizing the display's built-in frame-rate conversion mechanism which allows the monitor for gamers to adapt its native 60Hz frequency to either 40+ fps or 30+ fps depending on whether you are running a compatible AMD Radeon card + driver software or not. It only refreshes at max at 70hz so maximum FPS is capped at 70fps - Same as most other screens, however, it is very good for competitive gaming.

Should I buy ViewSonic VX2458-MHD monitor for the office?

In case you just want a ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor for work and don't care for the color accuracy or details then yes, get the ViewSonic VX2458 MHD. If you rely on perfect colors and accurate images during work, look elsewhere.

This VX2458-MHDmonitor has a very good color reproduction (average DeltaE of 2.4) but it is not accurate enough for professional work where consistency and accuracy are key to achieving great results.

Is VX2458-MHD gaming monitor good for professional use?

In case you want to do photo editing, web development or anything that requires a very high-quality display with rich colors and accurate color reproduction then no, get a better monitor instead. The ViewSonic VX2458 MHD is not going to satisfy your needs at all in this regard.

Web designers and developers should look into a better gaming monitor that's accurate right out of the box, has great colors and color calibration options, has a high resolution and has good viewing angles. It will be more expensive but it is money well spent compared to this one.

What should you consider before buying ViewSonic VX2458 MHD?

Before buying the ViewSonic VX2458-MHD, make sure that you have a compatible AMD Radeon card and driver software.

If you don't have VRR technology support from an AMD card, this monitor won't do anything for you except provide a very high pixel density at 1080p resolution.

The most important benefits of the ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor will be lost with console gaming as it does not support FreeSync on Xbox One/PS4 or TV/monitor connected through HDMI.

Note: You need an AMD graphics card that supports "FreeSync" technology for this display to work as intended. This includes R7 260/260x, R9 290/290x, R9 295X2, R9 380/380x/390/390x, RX 460/460, RX 470/470, and RX 480 /480.

Alternative products for VX2458-MHD screen

If you are looking for a monitor that's good for office use as well as gaming then consider the Iiyama G-Master GB2888UHSU Gold Phoenix which is also available for $160.

It comes with a 4ms response time, Flicker-Free technology, height-adjustable stand, great viewing angles, rich color palette (99% sRGB coverage) but it lacks FreeSync support. Also, this monitor is better in color accuracy as it comes with a DeltaE average of 1.5 which is way better than the ViewSonic VX2458 MHD 2.4. However, it is not as good at 1080p resolution as the ViewSonic VX2458-MHD.

If you are a casual gamer and want a monitor that's good at both office work + gaming then consider the Iiyama G-Master GB2888UHSU Gold Phoenix. It has a fast response time, great viewing angles (178/178), very high pixel density (109ppi), high contrast ratio (100M:1) but lacks FreeSync support like any other G-Master monitor on this list. It comes with a height-adjustable stand, built-in speakers, and a USB hub too.

Alternatively, get the Acer KG271 which is also available for $150. This monitor comes with a 4ms response time, Flicker-Free technology, height-adjustable stand but its viewing angles are not as good (170/160). It also has a slower response time (5ms) and it does not have built-in speakers.

Bottom line

ViewSonic VX2458 MHD is a good choice for competitive gaming at 1080p resolution. It has a very high pixel density (107ppi), low input lag, fast response time, built-in speakers and it also comes with two HDMI ports.

However, ViewSonic VX2458 MHD monitor is not recommended if you are doing professional work where accuracy is key or you are a creative person who wants accurate colors. ViewSonic VX2458-MHD's color representation is average at best which means that photos/videos/graphics may look washed out compared to other monitors that have better color reproduction.
